lake jackson's moon
The air was cool, the stars were bright
second blue moon of the last year shone that night
the shepherd slept beneath a tree, and dreamed of sheep and dogs and sweet Kathleen
But when he woke, the sheep were gone
He cried out loud for all of them to come
The wayward flock was 'probly not far gone
So he set out to find the sheep and take them home
But the sheep were creeping oer the field
The shepherd's cry they would not yield
For freedoms song had sung it's tune
And all the sheep tried to escape that very night beneath the light o' Lake Jackson's Moon
The shepherd walked and called their names
"Sweet Molly O! Where hast thee gone?"
He rambled fields and through the woods
until he found himself near along the shore
The night was clear, and til then quiet
then laughter came out of the night
and out mid-lake on a pontoon
he spied his naked wife and the neighbor's son Mcguire
beneath the light o' Lake Jackson's moon
His heart was broken with surprise
He raised the rifle scope up to his eyes
his young wife's breasts were without care
And the neighbor's son Mcguire's hands ran through her hair
He beaded in between her eyes, and all the truth of hurtful lies
but at that moment Molly's head...came in between...his wife Kathleen's...
and the bullet's lead
For Molly O, his lamb divine was neither glib nor a specially swift ovine
the other sheep had turned for home
and left poor Molly O to die alone
The shepherd cradled Molly's head
And cried out that she should not be one that's dead
I've loved you dear, as any man could do
Think of our times and the sweet wine we shared at night
beneath the light o' Lake Jackson's moon
When he got home, how Kathleen cried
"You mustn't think it was what you thought you spied!
'Twas just a swim beneath the moon...
He's just a boy and you're my man, I'd never stray, there is no way
please understand, this is for you" as she slipped out and dropped her dress
layed on the grass with out-streched arms and all her charms shone in the night
beneath the light o' Lake Jackson's moon
A short time on, they sat by the fire
the shepherd knew now his wife was not a liar
He touched her cheek, she kissed his hand...
Then they went back to the chops with a nice mint sauce
and a salad with a vinaigrette, and a little rice, a glass of wine
and life was fine that beautiful night beneath the light
o' Lake Jackson's moon
And life was fine, that beautiful night, beneath the light o' Lake Jackson's Moon!
